Kerbs

Maybe online dating is the answer?

This comical, heart-warming, and enlightening play about the journey into a new relationship sheds a light on the politics of modern dating.

A tragic start as Lucy (play by Maya Coates) ends up on the Kerb after having a few too many ‘cock-tails’ on a first date and she crashes her wheelchair, finding herself in the emergency room with a stranger by her side.

“One swipe right doesn’t mean flowers in the hospital” she says!

The story develops in a similar fashion, a series of ups and downs- quite literally at times! From an awkward first time to fireworks lighting the backdrop as the couple navigate their new sexual relationship. The show sheds a light on the antics of a romantic getaway when a personal carer is needed to help you get you clothes back on after a steamy encounter in the public bathroom. The awkwardness of this is not disguised as we see Toni (played by Rekha John-Cheriyan) advised to leave the toilet once Lucy is undressed, hilariously waiting outside for them to finish.

The dynamic between the three characters is carried by their vibrant performances and an undeniable chemistry that builds our anticipation as the intensity of the relationship only grows.

Modern and fresh throughout, bold, colourful lights cover the stage and a constant stream of texts light the backwall. The online world collides with real life right in front of our eyes, making you question its place in society when one often exists online so differently from in reality.

This story brings to the stage something so often left behind closed doors and, despite the audience sharing a laugh with the cast throughout, the emotional investment is central to its vitality. It is impossible not to connect with the cast, who bring such warmth to the stage.
